A fascinating piece with a rich history! Did you know that Harrods, the iconic department store in Knightsbridge, London, has been making nurse uniforms since the 1890s? This dress was most likely made for an in-house nurse (rather than a commercial offering) and would have been part of the nurse's uniform.
It is made from a lightweight chambray fabric, designed to be worn with an apron, pin-on collar and cuffs, and a nurse’s hat. The dress features a press stud and buttonhole fastening at the back of the neck, a button-through front to the waist, and a hook & eye at the waistband. The sleeves taper to 4 buttons at the cuffs, while the skirt includes a single turn-over style pocket and a tiered hemline.
Condition: In good condition. The majority of the dress is in great shape, but there is some fading, small stains, and rust-coloured specks on one sleeve (probably blood!).
