This late 1930s homemade dress exudes vampy vixen vibes with its sleek, inky black velvet fabric. A rare find in a voluptuous size, it’s still totally wearable today. The dress features a flattering, sweeping silhouette, a wide neckline, and unique sleeves that combine bishop and dolman styles, with poppers at the cuffs for a polished finish.
The waist and sleeves are tightly pleated, giving the dress structure and elegance. There are small poppers and a hook-and-eye at the waist to secure the dress, plus a button closure at the back of the neck. The original owner added belt loops, and I've styled it with both a 1930s paste clasp belt (not included) and a modern silky purple belt (not included).
Condition: In good condition overall and presents beautifully. The dress was worn as a stage costume, so there have been some minor adjustments made by the costume department. New belt loops and an internal elastic waist were added (pics 12 & 13). The velvet is smooth with subtle wear.
The inner lining has some missing areas (pic 16), and the hem has been hand-sewn to correct previous hemming and repair small rips (pics 14 & 15). Black velvet can be tricky to photograph, so feel free to ask for more photos or videos for a closer look.
