1930s Satin Evening Dress
A slinky, lustrous satin evening dress from the 1930s in a true inky black. It features a scoop neckline and a fluid skirt, and has been cut on the bias to create that characteristic, body-skimming drape.
The bodice and back are adorned with crisscrossing lines of embroidery, accented with hand-sewn beads for added sparkle. Bow motifs appear at both the bust and back, along with scattered original gelatin sequins and traces of sequin residue across the bodice and skirt. A wide, attached sash belt cinches the waist, and the dress can also be worn back to front for a different look.
Condition:
A wounded bird, but in my opinion that only makes her easier to wear. The flaws are primarily aesthetic rather than structural. Please study the photographs carefully, as I have tried to capture the issues as clearly as possible.
- The satin has blemishes throughout.
- There are some small areas of moth damage, including nibbling and minor weakening of the satin.
- Some beading is missing, and there is fraying to the embroidery in places.
- Most of the gelatin sequins have been lost to time, leaving only residue, particularly on the skirt.
- There are general signs of wear throughout, as she has clearly been loved and worn over her nearly 100-year lifetime.
